How awesome is our comfort zone?
Iāve been thinking about doing some mental health videos for longer than I care to admit, but Iām much more comfortable hitting a keyboard than looking at my own face.
So Iāve resisted.
And plus, I can email you guys from bed, you wonāt know unless I admit it š but there are certain lines I just donāt wanna crossā¦ in video form.
But deep down Iāve known, there are benefits from getting āmultimediaā.
And yet, I still resisted.
Then Channel 5 News got in touch to see if I could help with their Mental Health Awareness Week š
The āget shit doneā life hack
Months of procrastination was overcome by an attractive request, and more importantly, a solid deadline.
Over one weekend, I bashed out five videos.
Parkinsonās Law explains that work expands to fill the time available for its completion.
So if you have no deadline or goal in mind, in theory, it wonāt get done.
If you have two weeks - itāll take two weeks.
Two days - Voila.
Of course, thereās a practicality to it. It needs to be possible, or perhaps, more importantly, you need to believe that itās possible.
ā¦Iām not going to be able to build a house in a weekend having zero skills, experience, tools, team and very limited upper body strength just because Parkinson said so.
But a short yet achievable deadline coupled with a desire to accomplish the task meant that I hopped out of my comfort zone and got shit done.
Parkinsonās Law at its absolute finest.
Wanna use the hack?
Take your to do list
Estimate how much time it will take to do each task
Give yourself HALF that time to complete it
You need to see the deadline as critical, or else youāll just start filling it with unhelpful thoughts, internet searches or complications.
But give it a shot. Because when you get skilled at it then you can say that youāve been given the gift of time.
Watch the collection šŗ
This is an extra special small change preview - two of videos havenāt been aired yet.
But Iām proud of getting this content out into the world. And call me sentimental, but I thought it would be nice to show you guys the full collection first.
Watch them, share them, let me know what you think.
And now that Iāve dusted off the webcam, fire over any subjects youād like me to tackleā¦ perhaps with a deadline.
Coping with depression (exclusive preview)
Coping with Loneliness (exclusive preview)
How to help others
Coping with anxiety
Self care isnāt selfish
See you in June,
Amber
Every day Iām balancing
Ps. Iām taking some time off next week so there wonāt be a small change, see ya on the other side.
Come see me on Sunday
Iāll be talking at the Festival Of Fun about the Pursuit of Happiness (see me on the Main Stage at 5pm). The Little Surprises Company have put a great event together and all proceeds go to support food banks. Very cool.
